Finch Brand Overview
Finch is a data connectivity platform for employment systems. It provides a unified employment API for payroll, HR, and benefits data. With a single integration, applications can access payroll, HR, and benefits data across Finch's network of 250+ data providers, including Human Capital Management (HCM) systems (HRIS, payroll, ben admin) and Retirement Recordkeepers. Finch translates data from each provider into one standardized data model, so businesses can support integrations with many systems of record without building and maintaining independent partnerships and implementations.
Finch's API products are Organization, Payroll, Deductions, Benefits, and Recordkeeper. Employers authorize access to their systems through Finch Connect, an embeddable authorization flow.
Primary users: Application developers and operations teams that rely on employer data, such as employee records, payroll details, and benefit elections and enrollments. These users are typically found at benefits administration and navigation platforms, retirement recordkeepers and third-party administrators (TPAs), insurance carriers and TPAs, and HR, finance, and compliance software companies. Finch's customers range in size from early-stage startups to Fortune 500 companies.
Finch does not typically sell to end-users (employers) directly. Instead, developers embed Finch into their applications where their users (HR admins) can connect their systems of record. Alternatively, Finch may also work with employers via a channel referral from a handful of retirement recordkeepers (eg. Voya, Transamerica, Empower). This is fundamentally different from employee-authorized connections, where an individual employee connects only their own account (eg. Plaid, Pinwheel, Argyle).
Platform scale:
- 100,000+ employers connected
- 16M+ employee records synced
- 250+ HRIS, payroll, ben admin, and recordkeeping systems
Primary markets:
- Retirement recordkeeping and administration – 401(k) payroll integrations, automated census collection, and contribution syncing between payroll and recordkeepers
- Core benefits navigation, administration, and strategy – benefits enrollment and eligibility data, and payroll deduction sync, for benefits navigation tools, brokers, and leave of absence management
- Insurance billing and operations – payroll and census data for carriers and insurance TPAs, used for eligibility, premium billing reconciliation, and claims, instead of manual census and eligibility files
- HR technology – employee directory, employment status, job title, department, manager, start and end dates, and compensation data for employee onboarding, offboarding, account provisioning, and HR analytics
- Security and compliance – HRIS roster data for compliance automation platforms that track employee onboarding and offboarding for SOC 2 and ISO 27001 audits
- B2B finance and taxes – payroll data for ERP, accounting, FP&A, and headcount planning tools, and for R&D tax credit and WOTC calculations
- Workers' compensation – payroll and wage data for pay-as-you-go workers' comp premiums and premium audits
- Voluntary workplace benefits – employee information, eligibility data, pay details, and payroll deductions for HSA, FSA, commuter, earned wage access, emergency savings, and other voluntary benefits

Write requests are processed asynchronously and return a job ID; changes are written within 24 hours on automated integrations and within 2 business days on assisted integrations. Supported deduction types include 401(k), Roth 401(k), 401(k) loan, 403(b), 457, SIMPLE IRA, Section 125 medical, dental, and vision, HSA, FSA, commuter, and custom pre- and post-tax deductions; support varies by provider. It includes nine endpoints:
- Get All Deductions (GET /employer/benefits) – all company-level deductions and contributions
- Get Deduction (GET /employer/benefits/{benefit_id}) – a deduction's type, description, and frequency
- Get Enrolled Individuals (GET /employer/benefits/{benefit_id}/enrolled) – the employees enrolled in a deduction
- Get Deductions for Individuals (GET /employer/benefits/{benefit_id}/individuals) – each employee's contribution, employer contribution, and annual maximum
- Create Deduction (POST /employer/benefits) – creates a new deduction in payroll
- Register Deduction (POST /employer/benefits/register) – registers a deduction that already exists in payroll (assisted integrations)
- Update Deduction (POST /employer/benefits/{benefit_id}) – changes a deduction's details
- Enroll Individuals (POST /employer/benefits/{benefit_id}/individuals) – enrolls employees or changes their employee and employer contribution amounts
- Unenroll Individuals (DELETE /employer/benefits/{benefit_id}/individuals) – removes employees from a deduction
- Intended user: Applications that need to change what is deducted from employee paychecks. Examples include 401(k) providers setting employee deferrals and employer match; health benefits and ICHRA platforms setting up pre- and post-tax deductions; HSA and FSA administrators; financial wellness platforms; and insurers collecting premiums through payroll deductions.
Benefits
- Description: Read-only access to benefit plan, enrollment, and dependent data from the benefits module of an employer's HCM system. The Benefits product reads plan and enrollment records; the Deductions product writes payroll deductions. It includes three endpoints:
- Plans (GET /employer/plans) – plan type (medical, dental, vision, life, short- and long-term disability, other), name, carrier, plan year, coverage tiers, and deduction code
- Enrollments (GET and POST /employer/plans-enrollments) – enrollment status, coverage tier, coverage dates, waiver status, employee and employer contributions, and covered dependents
- Dependents (GET and POST /employer/plans-dependents) – dependent name, date of birth, and relationship; dependent data is permissioned separately
- Intended user: Applications that need to know which plans an employer offers and who is enrolled. Examples include benefits navigation and administration platforms, brokers, carriers and insurance billing platforms, and applications that reconcile enrollment records against payroll deductions.
Recordkeeper
- Description: Automates the exchange of retirement plan data between payroll systems and retirement plan recordkeepers, replacing manual file exchanges. Recordkeeper does not yet have public API endpoints. It moves two types of data:
- Contributions – pre-tax, Roth, employer match, and loan repayment amounts sync from payroll to the recordkeeper after each payroll
- Elections – election changes made at the recordkeeper sync back to payroll
- Intended user: This product serves a different set of users than the other products:
- Payroll platforms that want to offer integrations with retirement plan recordkeepers
- Third-party administrators (TPAs) and advisors who need employer data for census files and Form 5500 reporting
- Employers (plan sponsors) that want to automate the data exchange for their own HR team
Finch Connect
- Description: Finch Connect is an embeddable, employer-facing UI that guides users through the authorization flow that every Finch integration uses to onboard employers. An application embeds Finch Connect (using Finch's JavaScript or React SDK) or sends the employer a link to a hosted version. The employer selects its HR or payroll provider, reviews the requested permissions and privacy disclosures, and authenticates according to the provider’s required method. Finch Connect also supports invite links and employers with multiple entities.
- Intended user: The end-user of the connections supported by Finch’s APIs. This is whomever holds the administrator role within the employer’s system of record, who can consent to sharing data and provide credentials for authentication. However, it is worth noting that Connect is beneficial to specific personas at Finch customers: the product and engineering leaders at the applications that integrate with Finch, and customer success and implementation teams that help their employer customers connect.
Platform Capabilities and Features
- Standardized data model: Data from every provider is returned in one schema, with the same field names, enumerated values (such as earning, tax, and benefit types), and currency amounts in cents. Field availability varies by provider and is listed in Finch's field support documentation.
- Developer Dashboard: A web application at dashboard.tryfinch.com for managing API credentials, connections and connection status, Finch Connect links, the providers shown in Finch Connect, webhooks, and payroll mapping. Developers can sign up for a free Dashboard account (sandbox) at www.dashboard.tryfinch.com/signup.
- Payroll mapping: A Dashboard feature for assigning standard labels (such as bonus, commission, pre-tax salary deferral, and Roth salary deferral) to each employer's pay statement items. Finch pre-fills the labels using default rules, and the customer confirms them once per employer. Customers can send a secure link to the employer for items that need the employer's input.
- API Explorer: A tool in the Developer Dashboard for sending API calls and viewing responses without managing access tokens.
- Deductions mapping: Maps each employer's payroll deduction codes to normalized deduction types (such as employee pre-tax and Roth) for both percentage and flat-dollar contributions, so applications do not need employer-specific logic.
- Sandboxes (Finch and Provider): The Finch Sandbox provides mock employer data for up to 100 test connections and supports both automated and assisted flows. The Provider Sandbox connects to real provider demo and trial accounts (such as Gusto, Deel, and BambooHR) for up to 5 test connections. Both are free.
- Webhooks: Notifications sent to the customer's server when a connection's status changes, when a job (such as a data sync or deduction write) completes, or when data is created, updated, or deleted. Data-change events are available for automated connections.
- Request forwarding: Lets customers send requests directly to a provider's own API through an existing Finch connection, to reach data outside Finch's standard data model. Available on Pro and Premier plans for supported providers.
- Flat file: Finch can deliver standardized data as files to a customer's SFTP server after the first connection and after each pay run, for customers that do not build against the API. Custom file formats are available as an add-on.

Primary Use Cases
How does Finch work?
In production, a customer integrates Finch's API into its backend and embeds Finch Connect in its application. Each employer authorizes access through Finch Connect. Finch then syncs that employer's data on a schedule: every 24 hours for automated integrations and every 7 days for assisted integrations (see How Finch Uses Assisted Integrations to Expand Data Coverage). The customer reads standardized data through the API and (with the Deductions or Recordkeeper products) writes changes back to the employer's payroll system. Common use cases are below.
401(k) and Retirement
- Description: Recordkeepers and TPAs use Finch to collect payroll and census data from plan sponsors every pay run, and to write employee deferral and employer contribution changes to payroll. This supports contribution processing, eligibility tracking, 3(16) fiduciary services, year-end audits, and nondiscrimination testing. Data can also be delivered directly to TPA software such as PensionPro and FIS Relius, or as files.
- Intended client: 401(k) recordkeepers and retirement TPAs
- Products used: Organization, Payroll, Deductions, Recordkeeper
Health Benefits
- Description: Benefits platforms use Finch to read employee roster and eligibility data, read plan and enrollment data, and set up benefit deductions in payroll after employees enroll.
- Intended client: Benefits navigators, benefits brokers, ancillary benefits carriers, leave and absence managers, insurance TPAs, and eligibility auditors.
- Products used: Organization, Payroll, Deductions, Benefits
ICHRA / CHOICE
- Description: ICHRA or CHOICE platforms use Finch to read the employer's payroll roster to determine eligibility, and to create pre- or post-tax payroll deductions when an employee chooses coverage that costs more than the employer-funded allowance.
- Intended client: ICHRA platforms and administrators.
- Products used: Organization, Payroll, Deductions
HR Technology
- Description: HR software vendors use Finch to read directory and employment data (employment status, title, department, manager, start date) and compensation data. They use it to automate employee onboarding, account provisioning and deprovisioning, and workflows triggered by employee changes. Examples include learning management, recognition and rewards, gifting, performance management, workforce planning, and compensation benchmarking.
- Intended client: HR technology vendors.
- Products used: Organization, Payroll
Financial Wellness
- Description: Financial wellness platforms use Finch to read paycheck-level payroll data and to write pre- and post-tax deductions and employer match amounts to payroll. Examples include earned wage access, emergency savings, HSA and FSA accounts, student loan and tuition benefits, and commuter benefits.
- Intended client: Financial wellness, earned wage access, and workplace savings platforms.
- Products used: Organization, Payroll, Deductions
Finance & ERP
- Description: Finance platforms use Finch to read pay statement line items and employee data. They use it to create payroll journal entries automatically, plan headcount and compensation, and build forecasts.
- Intended client: ERP and accounting software, FP&A platforms, equity and compensation management platforms, and expense management platforms.
- Products used: Organization, Payroll
Compliance SaaS
- Description: Governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) platforms use Finch to read HRIS roster data. They use it to automate employee onboarding, offboarding, and access provisioning checks that support audits such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, and HIPAA.
- Intended client: GRC and compliance automation platforms, IT device management platforms, and HR compliance software.
- Products used: Organization

Competitive Advantages
Advantage 1: Largest network of employment data systems
- Description: Finch supports 250+ HRIS, payroll, ben admin, and recordkeeping systems, the largest network of employment data systems on the market. Finch is the only unified API focused exclusively on the employment ecosystem. It uses two integration types:
- Automated integrations connect through a provider's API, OAuth, or credentials.
- Assisted integrations cover providers that do not offer a public API: the employer adds Finch as a third-party administrator, and Finch manages the data sync with the provider on the employer's behalf using automated scripts.
- Evidence: Finch publishes the integration type and status for each provider and product in its documentation. Customers on paid plans can request new providers. See Integration Types and the Provider Network.
Advantage 2: Payroll data depth and write-back
- Description: Finch returns payroll data at the line-item level. Each pay statement separates earnings by type (such as salary, hourly wages, overtime, bonus, commission, tips, and PTO) with hours; taxes by type (federal, state, local, and FICA), split between employee and employer taxes; employee deductions by benefit type with a pre-tax or post-tax flag; and employer contributions by benefit type. Finch can also write changes back to payroll. The Deductions product creates and updates deductions and contributions, with changes written within 24 hours on automated integrations and within 2 business days on assisted integrations. The Recordkeeper product syncs contributions and election changes in both directions between payroll and recordkeepers.
- Evidence: See the Pay Statement API reference, the Deductions documentation, and processing times on the Integration Types page.
Advantage 3: Standardized data model
- Description: Data from every provider, across all products, is returned in the same schema. Employee, employment, and company records use the same field names regardless of the source system. Payroll earnings, taxes, deductions, and contributions use the same set of types, and deduction and benefit types use one shared list. Finch automatically classifies pay statement items from their descriptions. When a provider uses internal codes that cannot be classified automatically, customers use payroll mapping to confirm labels once per employer. Finch also supports request forwarding (passthrough requests to the provider's own API) for data outside the standard model.
- Evidence: See the data model and pay statement classification documentation.
Advantage 4: Employer-authorized onboarding
- Description: Connections are authorized by an employer administrator, not by individual employees. Once connected, the application can see data for all employees in the employer's Human Capital Management (HCM) systems (HRIS, payroll, ben admin), and, with write permissions, make changes to the payroll system, which offers more control and visibility than employee-authorized connections. Employers connect through Finch Connect, a single embedded flow that handles each provider's authentication requirements (such as credentials, OAuth, API tokens, or third-party administrator setup), so the application does not build provider-specific onboarding. The employer reviews and approves the specific data permissions before any data is shared, and is typically not charged.
- Evidence: See the Finch Connect documentation and Finch's page for employers at tryfinch.com/for-employers.
Advantage 5: Provider partnerships
- Description: Finch works directly with HRIS and payroll providers through partnerships. Partners include Gusto, UKG, Paycor, Justworks, BambooHR, HiBob, and Personio. Because Finch focuses only on the HR and payroll space, it invests in these partnerships and negotiates deals with providers that are passed on to the connecting application, including higher API rate limits and reduced or no API fees.
- Evidence: See Finch's partner page, the reflection on a year of partnership with Gusto, and the celebration of three years of partnership with Paycor. Other official partners include Justworks, UKG, isolved, Rippling, Oyster, BambooHR, and others.
Advantage 6: Security and data handling
- Description: Finch is SOC 2 Type II audited and encrypts data in transit and at rest. See the Data Security section below for details.
- Evidence: See Finch's security page and Trust Center.
